Ruins of Belchite

Shaped by Conflict

Belchite is located in Aragón near Zaragoza. The old town was heavily damaged during the Spanish Civil War and left standing as a historic record.

Civil War History

In 1937, intense fighting took place in Belchite. Streets, homes, and churches were destroyed during urban combat.

Preserved Ruins

Instead of rebuilding the old town, a new Belchite was constructed nearby. The ruins were kept to show the impact of war on civilian life.

Architecture  Frozen in Time

Collapsed roofs, broken towers, and empty streets remain visible. These structures reflect everyday town life interrupted by violence.

Memory & Reflection

Today, the ruins of Belchite serve as a place of remembrance. They help explain the long social and cultural effects of conflict.
